Obituary Notes: "Fred Elmer Purdy, son of Edward and Mercy Jane Purdy, was born Dec. 17, 1879, in the township of LaGrange, and passed away at Sparta on July 15, 1961, at the age of 81 years, six months and 28 days. On May 1, 1898, he married Ada Greeno, and four children were born to this union. Mrs. Purdy preceded him in death six years ago. In his early years, he worked on his father's farm in Purdy Valley northwest of Tomah, also in the woods of northern Wisconsin and on the railroad section out of Tomah. He and his family settled on a farm in Union Valley, where they lived for about 24 years. In 1927 he and his wife moved to Tomah, where he has made his home and where he was employed for a while by the Monroe County Highway Department, then at the Milwaukee Railroad shops until 1952, when he retired. Mr. Purdy was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, Edwin D. Purdy of Beloit, George Purdy, Mrs. Abbie Schultz, and Mrs. Lydia Vandervort of the state of Washington. He leaves one son, Hugh Purdy of Beloit; three daughters, Mrs. Iva Hart of Milwaukee, Mrs. Willard Densmore and Mrs. Vera Wilde of Tomah; one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Dora Goff; and one brother, Will Purdy, both of Sparta; five sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, also many nieces and cousins, and friends and acquaintances. Funeral services were held at the Tomah Methodist church on July 18, with Dr. Roger B. Knutsen officiating. interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah." He was buried on 18 July 1961 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.27,57,83 in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
